Abstract

The storming road of identities in Central America

The article expounds on four themes: the stereotypes Costa Ricans had about Chinese and black immigration in Costa Rica during the end of 19th Century and beginning of 20th Century, respectively, using poignant and dramatic examples. Next, it discuses the present situation of Nicaraguan immigrants to Costa Rica. It continues with a discussion about the emigration of Salvadorians to the United States, an example of what is occurring in the countries known as the northern triangle (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador). It ends with an analysis of the migrant when he returns to his country by referencing the novel El Asco, by the Salvadorian writer Horacio Castellanos. The article is written as a historical, cultural, and literary exploration. The main idea is that the traditional national identities are being broken, and the various fragments are recreating new identities that are fluctuating, imprecise and pushing the national limits –a phenomenon in which migrants have played a determinant role in the region.
